Tooth Extraction

Oral Surgery in Notting Hill

Removing a tooth can sometimes be the only option if it has been damaged beyond repair or if it remaining in the mouth is detrimental to your general oral health.

While we will attempt to save as many of your natural teeth as possible, on occasion it becomes necessary to extract a damaged or decayed tooth. It may also be necessary to remove teeth prior to orthodontic treatment if your mouth is overcrowded.

Tooth Extraction Notting Hill
The additional teeth or tooth is extracted to create space for your other teeth to move into a better alignment. Impacted wisdom teeth may also need to be removed when they cause repeated infections, cause overcrowding or are unable to break through the gums. At Westbourne Grove Dental, we understand that tooth extraction may seem like a daunting prospect, but as experts in oral health, we will only recommend this if it is the best course of action for your oral health.

Treatment

Prior to your tooth being removed, we will explain the process so you know the steps that will be taken. In most cases tooth extraction is a quick procedure that takes place over the course of two appointments- the first is to fully consult with you and examine your teeth and the second is when the extraction takes place.

Many patients can manage the procedure with local anaesthetic applied to the affected area, however, we can offer sedation if you feel anxious about the procedure or are worried about experiencing pain. Our dentists are highly experienced and skilled in tooth extraction and will ensure you know how to look after the site once the procedure has been completed.

Questions & Answers

Does tooth extraction hurt? During the procedure, your mouth will be numbed with a local anaesthetic, or you may be under sedation. Following the extraction, you may have some discomfort but your dentist will advise you about which over the counter medications may help.

What do I do once the tooth has been removed? Initially you will still feel numb from the anaesthetic, however, once this wears off we would recommend avoiding hard or chewy food for a few days until the pain subsides. Also, do not rinse out your mouth following the procedure as this may prevent the blood from clotting and the gum from starting the healing process.
