Fillings

A filling is used to restore a tooth after it has been damaged by decay. The filling restores the affected tooth to strengthen and protect it from deteriorating further.

Decay causes holes or cavities to develop in the enamel, leaving the inside of a tooth vulnerable to infection if bacteria invades.

At Westbourne Grove Dental, we offer a variety of filling types, from metal, composite resin, amalgam or porcelain. We also offer patients white fillings, an attractive alternative to the traditional filling.

Treatment

When your dentist examines your mouth, they will check for holes or cavities.

They may also take x-rays to see the extent of damage if they feel you require a filling. After choosing the type of filling, the dentist will proceed to treatment. This may entail removing the damaged or decayed part of the tooth. The affected tooth will then be cleaned and prepped before the filling is applied directly to the tooth. Occasionally, if decay has caused serious deterioration of the tooth, your dentist may recommend a crown instead.

Questions & Answers

Will the treatment be painful? The placement of a filling is not painful and if the area feels sensitive the dentist may offer you a local anaesthetic so you can have treatment without discomfort.

Will people be able to see my filling? You can choose tooth-coloured or white fillings to avoid detection. Metallic fillings are only used towards the back of the mouth so they are not immediately visible. Please discuss the different options with your dentist.
